All you need is a revolutionary app idea that has probably already been attempted, some programming ability—or enough money to hire someone who has it—and a little luck.
Follow these instructions carefully, and you may soon become the next Mark Zuckerberg. Or, at the very least, someone who tells people at parties that he is “working on an AI startup.”

1. Invent a Groundbreaking Idea
Begin with an idea so original that it is almost criminal nobody has thought of it before.

Try not to worry about whether similar products already exist. Market research can come later, preferably after you have spent several months developing the app.

The Joke Became the Business Model
When this article was published in January 2023, the idea of creating yet another chatbot app sounded like an obvious joke. Three and a half years later, the joke has acquired venture capital, a subscription plan, an “agentic” roadmap, and a keynote presentation explaining how it will transform civilization.
A chatbot that merely answers questions would now be considered almost charmingly primitive. Today’s leading AI systems write, analyze files, generate images, produce software, interact with applications, and increasingly attempt to complete entire projects. The chatbot has not disappeared; it has simply been promoted to “agent,” given access to your documents, and encouraged to behave like an unpaid employee with administrator privileges.
The original guide suggested that an aspiring entrepreneur could ask ChatGPT to write the code. That prediction proved less absurd than expected. “Vibe coding” now allows people to describe an application in ordinary language while an AI generates much of the software. Programming expertise has not vanished, however. It has been relocated to the less glamorous task of discovering why the automatically generated application works beautifully in the demonstration and collapses the moment an actual user touches it. Research on AI-assisted programming similarly suggests that these tools redistribute expertise rather than eliminate it, while autonomous workflows can introduce unnecessary complexity and untested decisions.
The technological barrier to creating an app has therefore fallen dramatically. Unfortunately, so has the barrier to creating thousands of nearly identical apps.
The market is now crowded with AI assistants, AI writers, AI tutors, AI companions, AI analysts, AI meeting assistants, AI productivity assistants, and AI assistants designed to organize the outputs produced by the other AI assistants. The race is no longer merely to build a chatbot. It is to become the chatbot users open before they remember that six other chatbots are already installed. Consumer AI usage has expanded and fragmented across major platforms, creative tools, specialized products, and emerging agents, all competing to become the user’s default interface with artificial intelligence.
In 2023, a founder could place a chat interface over an API and describe the result as innovation. In 2026, that same product is more likely to be described—usually by another founder—as an “AI wrapper.” The insult is not entirely fair: wrappers can solve real problems. But adding a logo, a subscription screen, and a motivational system prompt to someone else’s model is not necessarily a technological revolution. Sometimes it is simply a recurring invoice with rounded corners.
The deeper problem is that AI has made prototypes cheap while leaving judgment expensive. It can generate the interface, code, documentation, advertisements, support messages, and perhaps even the enthusiastic review written by the first customer—especially when the first customer does not yet exist. What it cannot automatically provide is a genuine problem worth solving, trustworthy data, responsible design, sustainable economics, or a convincing reason for people to use the product after the novelty disappears.
The fashionable solution is to rename the chatbot an agent. An agent does not merely answer your question; it takes action on your behalf. This sounds impressive until one remembers that taking action is precisely the stage at which an inaccurate answer stops being amusing and begins modifying files, sending messages, spending money, or reorganizing a project according to a misunderstanding delivered with exceptional confidence.
The satire of the original article has therefore aged in an uncomfortable way. The absurd fantasy was not that anyone could build a chatbot app and declare himself a technology entrepreneur. The absurd fantasy was that this would remain difficult enough to distinguish him from everyone else doing exactly the same thing.
So, should you still build the world’s greatest chatbot app?
Certainly.
Ask an AI to design it, another AI to code it, a third to test it, a fourth to market it, and a fifth to explain why nobody is using it. Then publish a long post announcing that the disappointing adoption figures represent “early validation of a category-defining opportunity.”
And when the app fails, do not call it a failure.
Call it a pivot.
Technology changes quickly. Entrepreneurial vocabulary changes even faster.
