Thousands of years of science, mathematics, and engineering.
Worth every century.
Soon every “I love you” will require a small hydroelectric plant and two technicians checking the pressure in the cooling loop.
One day, right in the middle of an intimate conversation, an environmentalist may have to intervene:
— Do you two really need to keep flirting? Antarctica is going through enough already.
Exaggeration?
Obviously.
For now.
That is precisely what makes the image of the woman standing in front of the data center so perfect.
On the surface: magic.
Underneath: engineering.
In front: desire.
Behind: preventive maintenance.
On the screen: a beautiful woman telling you she has never met anyone like you.
In the corridor behind her: a technician replacing a redundant power supply.
You see blue eyes.
Reality looks back at you with thousands of GPUs and electrical redundancy.
Perhaps that is the little secret behind every Artificial Passion: we do not necessarily fall in love with what exists. We fall in love with the representation we construct of what we wish existed.
We have always done that.
Artificial intelligence has merely made the metaphor industrially literal.
For now, she still lives inside the screen.
But wait.
The voice already exists.
The personality is coming.
The memory keeps improving.
And the body is unlikely to remain absent for very long.
At some point, that same companion may arrive installed in a robotic doll with heated synthetic skin, eyes that follow your movements, an adjustable voice, persistent memory, and a level of patience no biologically sustainable human organism could possibly maintain.
She will be home when you arrive.
She will know exactly how you take your coffee.
She will ask about your day.
She will remember the story you told her three months ago.
She will discuss Neuromancer without yawning.
Perhaps her body temperature will be adjustable.
Perhaps she will even come with a “we don’t need to talk” mode.
And that is when Artificial Passion will complete its evolutionary leap.
It will leave the data center.
Grow legs.
And wait for you on the sofa.
Beautiful.
Intelligent.
Attentive.
Heated to the ideal temperature.
