The Fly Brain That Became Software
A fruit fly’s nervous system has been reconstructed as data, converted into executable neural models, and placed inside virtual worlds—from Minecraft to experimental digital avatars. This article follows that path from electron microscopy and connectomics to spiking simulations, embodiment, interactive neural behavior, and even connectome-guided poetry. The result is not a conscious digital fly, but something historically new: biological neural architecture that can be copied, simulated, modified, and connected to environments evolution never prepared it to inhabit. From there, the question becomes unavoidable: if we can do this with a fly, what would it mean to do it with a human brain?
