In June 1993, I visited Sรฃo Paulo with a group of friends to participate in an event at Ibirapuera Park. It was the first International RPG Meeting (also known by the acronym EIRPG), a true Brazilian landmark for the tabletop RPG universe, highlighting classics such as Dungeons & Dragons (the original TSR version, not the crap of the contemporary Wizards of the Coast version), GURPS, MERP, Rolemaster, among others. The event was a conglomerate of activities, including several gaming tables, improvised book and polyhedral dice fairs, and autograph sessions with industry icons, such as Steve Jackson. That was, without a doubt, the paradise of true Generation X nerds.

Last month, more than three decades after that memorable visit, I returned to Sรฃo Paulo for a different event, this time accompanied by my son. We went to watch the Six Invitational 2024 World Finals, held at the Ibirapuera Stadium on February 23, 24 and 25. This mega-event celebrated the video game Rainbow Six Siege (R6), bringing together enthusiasts from all over the world in a vibrant competition. My son, who is a fan of the game, loved it. And I, in particular, confess that I was surprised by the level of professionalism of the event organization, it was really memorable days.

Training AI with Online Shooter Game Tactics: A Bridge to the Future of Robot Soldiers
In an increasingly technological world, artificial intelligence (AI) has been expanding its boundaries, infiltrating territories once exclusive to human creativity and improvisation. One of the most fascinating fields of this expansion is the use of online shooter games, such as Rainbow Six Siege (R6 Siege), to train AI in complex combat tactics and strategy. This approach not only revolutionizes how we understand AI learning and application but also outlines a future where robot soldiers could be a reality on the battlefield, bringing new ethical, strategic, and operational dimensions to the military and society as a whole.
Online shooter games, particularly those requiring teamwork, strategy, and advanced tactics like R6 Siege, provide a complex and challenging environment that somewhat resembles real combat scenarios. These games compile millions of recorded gameplay hours, offering a vast database of human decisions, strategies, mistakes, and successes in high-pressure situations. By using this data to train AI algorithms, researchers can teach machines not only the fundamentals of combat but also the nuance and adaptability that are characteristics of human decisions in critical situations.
The primary technique behind this learning is called reinforcement learning, a type of machine learning where an algorithm learns to make decisions through trial and error, receiving rewards for actions that bring it closer to the desired goal. By applying these principles to data collected from games like R6 Siege, AI can learn a wide range of tactics and strategies, from optimal positioning and movement to timing for using special equipment and weapons, all within a context that simulates pressures and needs similar to those encountered in real combat.
The transition of these virtual skills to real-world applications represents a significant leap. The idea of “uploading” AI-trained tactics from games to robot soldiers is no longer science fiction. With ongoing advancements in robotics and AI system integration, the near future could see robot soldiers operating alongside humans in reconnaissance missions, rescue operations, and even direct combat. Equipped with tactical knowledge derived from millions of hours of human gameplay, these robots could make quick and informed decisions in situations where human hesitation or error could cost lives.
However, this future brings with it a series of ethical and operational questions. Delegating combat decisions, especially those that may involve the life or death of humans, to non-human entities is a topic of intense debate. Furthermore, the security of these systems against hacking and misuse is a significant concern, given the destructive potential of these technologies. From an operational standpoint, integrating robot soldiers into the military will require new doctrines, training, and strategies tailored to the capabilities and limitations of these new “combatants.”
Exploring AI training in online shooter game tactics like R6 Siege opens up a new horizon for the development of defense and security technologies. While the potential to enhance effectiveness and reduce human cost in combat operations is immense, it is crucial that we proceed on this path with caution, ensuring that ethical and operational implications are carefully considered. The intersection between artificial intelligence and military strategy is still in its infancy, promising profound transformations in how future battles will be planned and executed.
