To my son and my students…
The transition from adolescence to adulthood can be compared to the moment when young eagles leave the nest for the first time. Just like these majestic birds, adolescents face a period filled with challenges and discoveries, but also with imminent risks and dangers.
High on the cliffs, the eagles’ nests offer safety and comfort. There, the chicks are fed and protected by their parents, growing strong and healthy. However, there comes a time when staying in the nest is no longer an option. To become full-fledged eagles, capable of exploring vast skies, they need to learn to fly. This process begins with the mother eagle encouraging her chicks to approach the edge of the nest. Gradually, she pushes them out of their comfort zone, urging them to spread their wings and experience flight. Initially, the sensation of free fall can be frightening, and many chicks hesitate, fearing the unknown. Some, however, cannot overcome this fear. Their wings are not yet strong enough, and without the necessary skill to fly, they plummet to a grim fate.
Similarly, adolescents are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone during the transition to adulthood. School, family, and society push them out of their protective nests, urging them to face new challenges and assume responsibilities. This process can be equally terrifying, as it involves overcoming fears and discovering new skills. However, not all manage to adapt to these changes. Those who do not learn from the advice and teachings of their parents, or who ignore the vital lessons of life, face a real danger. Like the eagles that fall without ever spreading their wings, these young people can meet a cruel fate. Lack of preparation, negligence, and resistance to change can lead them down dark paths where the risks are high and the consequences severe. The failure to develop the necessary skills to face the world can result in irreversible falls, both metaphorical and literal.
In contemporary society, social pressure, anxiety, and depression act as formidable obstacles hindering the journey of young people. Intense competition and unrealistic standards, coupled with a lack of emotional support, can transform the transition to adulthood into a daunting ordeal. Anxiety erodes confidence, casting doubts on one’s abilities to progress. Meanwhile, depression acts as a weight, impeding efforts to move forward. Economic inequality, limited access to quality education, and the absence of a strong support network further compound these challenges. Many young individuals find themselves trapped in environments where opportunities are scarce and overwhelming challenges abound. These combined pressures can deter even the most determined from achieving their aspirations.
Just as some young eagles never see the sky again, some adolescents who cannot face the challenges of adulthood get lost in abysses of despair and failure. Wasted opportunities, the inability to adapt, and the lack of resilience can lead to tragic fates. This is the dark side of the transition, where not everyone finds the freedom of flight but rather the harsh reality of the fall. Therefore, the passage from adolescence is a journey of high risks and great rewards. Those who manage to learn and adapt will find freedom and fulfillment, while those who fail may face dark consequences. Like eagles, young people must be prepared to spread their wings and fly, or risk the inevitable fall if they do not.
For adolescents grappling with anxiety and depression, remember that these struggles are akin to fierce winds attempting to push you back. It’s crucial to understand that these feelings are transient and do not define your future. Seek support from trusted friends, family members, or professionals who can offer guidance and empathy. Focus on taking small, achievable steps each day to foster resilience and self-confidence. Prioritize activities that nurture your mental well-being and bring you peace and joy. Remember, you are not alone in facing these difficulties, and with patience and support, you can navigate through them and emerge stronger than before.
Education plays a crucial role in this transition from adolescence to adulthood. It is the foundation upon which young people build the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of the adult world. Quality education provides the tools for critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability—essential qualities for overcoming the challenges of life. Without these educational foundations, the journey can be perilous and fraught with the risk of failure.
In many ways, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) mirrors this journey. Currently, AI is in its adolescence, a stage filled with both immense potential and significant risks. Just as adolescents must be guided and educated to harness their capabilities effectively, AI systems require careful development and ethical oversight to ensure they contribute positively to society.
The nurturing of AI, much like the nurturing of young minds, involves pushing the boundaries of innovation while ensuring a strong ethical framework. As we push AI out of its comfort zone, encouraging it to “spread its wings,” we must also be wary of the dangers. Unchecked and unrefined, AI can lead to unintended consequences, much like adolescents who are unprepared for adulthood. Therefore, the education of our youth and the development of AI share a common imperative: both must be guided with wisdom, care, and responsibility. By doing so, we can help our young people—and our technological advancements—soar to new heights, avoiding the dark fates that can come from neglect and misguidance. Both journeys, filled with high stakes and great potential, require a steadfast commitment to learning, growth, and ethical integrity.
Spread your wings, the sky is the limit!
