Abstract:
In the 1970s, Everett Reimer and Ivan Illich proposed radical critiques of formal schooling, portraying it as a coercive institution that perpetuates inequality and dependence. Today, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education reactivates these critiques in new and paradoxical ways. This paper revisits Reimer and Illich’s visions in light of recent technological developments, exploring how AI could either fulfill or distort their emancipatory hopes.

1. Introduction

In an era marked by institutional disillusionment, Everett Reimer and Ivan Illich articulated bold challenges to the role of formal schooling. Their books—School is Dead (1971) and Deschooling Society (1971)—offered scathing critiques of compulsory education, which they saw as a mechanism for social control and conformity^1,2. While often dismissed as utopian or impractical, their visions gain renewed urgency in the context of the rapid proliferation of AI technologies in education. This paper explores the contemporary relevance of their critiques and evaluates whether AI offers an opportunity to reimagine learning as a site of autonomy, or whether it merely reproduces existing power structures under new guises.

2. The Radical Critique of Schooling

Reimer regarded schools as bureaucratic machines that processed learners through standardized, technocratic rituals. In his view, “schools treat people and knowledge the way a technological world treats everything, as if they could be processed”³. He advocated for a redirection of educational investment: shifting funds from institutions to learners themselves, encouraging the formation of open educational networks in which teachers compete for students much like service providers in other professions.

Illich went further, proposing a complete disestablishment of schools, which he likened to hospitals and prisons—institutions fostering dependency. He argued for the creation of “convivial” educational networks: skill exchanges, peer-matching services, and access to educational resources untethered from formal curricula or professional certification². Illich believed that “learning is the human activity which least needs manipulation,” and thus should emerge from “unhampered participation in a meaningful setting”².

While visionary, these proposals drew criticism. Critics questioned whether such freedom could be equitably exercised in a society marked by inequality of access, background, and cultural capital⁴. Moreover, they warned that dismantling public education could open space for commercial interests to commodify learning in even more insidious ways⁵.

3. The AI Revolution: Opportunity and Irony

Contemporary educational technology offers, on the surface, many of the features Reimer and Illich advocated: personalized pathways, on-demand content, peer-based learning, and freedom from centralized control. Large Language Models (LLMs), intelligent tutoring systems, and adaptive platforms promise to democratize knowledge, tailor instruction, and extend learning beyond the classroom.

For example, AI-enabled platforms can connect learners across the globe in interest-based communities, offering peer-matching and just-in-time access to content, skills, and mentorship—hallmarks of Illich’s proposed networks. Furthermore, open-source learning environments and credit-based microcredentialing could echo Reimer’s vision of “educational credit” distributed to students instead of institutions¹.

However, these developments are not unequivocally emancipatory. The very infrastructure that makes educational AI possible—large data sets, proprietary algorithms, and capital-intensive platforms—is often controlled by a few dominant corporations. These systems may replicate old inequities via opaque algorithms, surveillance mechanisms, and profit-driven learning models. The risk of replacing one form of institutional manipulation with another remains real and underexamined⁶.

4. Toward a Reimagined Educational Commons

To harness AI in a way that aligns with Illich and Reimer’s emancipatory ideals, we must move beyond technological determinism and actively shape the governance, design, and ethos of educational systems. Key principles for such a reimagining include:

1. Learner Sovereignty: Learners must have meaningful agency over how AI systems guide their education. Algorithmic transparency and opt-out mechanisms are essential.
2. Equity of Access and Voice: Policies must address the digital divide, linguistic diversity, and cultural representation in AI systems.
3. Non-Proprietary Knowledge Platforms: Convivial tools must be reimagined as open-source, community-governed platforms designed to serve public interests rather than shareholder profits.
4. Human Mentorship and Moral Development: AI should support—not supplant—human relationships central to education, especially for fostering moral, civic, and emotional growth.
5. Democratic Participation in Educational Design: Stakeholders—including students, educators, and communities—must co-govern the implementation of AI in education, ensuring pluralism and responsiveness.

5. Conclusion

Reimer and Illich’s critiques were not simply rejections of formal schooling but proposals for a deeper reconception of education as self-directed, meaningful, and just. While their proposals were perhaps impractical in their time, AI presents both an opportunity and a danger: the potential to actualize decentralized, learner-centered education—or to consolidate power under algorithmic authority.

Their central question—“What is education for, and whom does it serve?”—remains pressing. The task before us is not merely to deploy new tools, but to cultivate new imaginaries: educational systems that prioritize autonomy, equity, and the flourishing of the whole person. If AI is to serve these ends, it must be embedded in structures of care, transparency, and democratic accountability.
